The Trinamool Congress has dismissed reports suggesting a merger with the Congress, calling the speculation completely baseless. The buzz intensified after top leaders from both sides held a series of meetings in recent days, triggering talk of a possible political realignment ahead of key elections. However, leaders from both parties have since made it clear that there is no such move.
Trinamool Congress leaders have underlined that the party will continue to function as an independent force in Indian politics. Senior Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee addressed the reports directly and said: “We are not merging with the Congress.” His statement was aimed at putting an end to the growing speculation over the party’s future direction.

KC Venugopal Clarifies Congress Stand
The Congress also moved quickly to counter the rumours. On June 11, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal held a press conference and called the merger reports false and baseless. He said the recent meetings were routine political discussions among allies and should not be seen as anything more.
The talks involved West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi. Separately, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee also met Rahul Gandhi. While many read these meetings as a sign of a larger political arrangement, Congress leaders said the discussions were only about opposition coordination and strategy.
Explaining the party’s position, KC Venugopal told reporters: “These are totally rumours. Yesterday, our communication secretary already stated that these are baseless things. Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee held routine discussions when they met Madam (Sonia Gandhi) and Rahul Gandhi. That’s an extension of the India Alliance discussion, because everybody wants to strengthen India Alliance. Everybody wants to strengthen the fight against this anti-democratic government. We will go together in that way, that is only the discussion point, nothing else,”

At the same time, political developments in West Bengal have added to the heat within the Trinamool Congress. Some dissident TMC MPs are reportedly planning to approach Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They say they want to raise constituency development issues, though party leaders remain sceptical about their intent.
Reacting sharply, Kalyan Banerjee said: “Let them do what they want. They will have to live under the shelter of the BJP. All this is a ploy. They cite the reason as development of their constituencies, but those who cannot even visit their constituencies, so what work will they do. When democracy has finished in West Bengal. What development has been done in the last one month, even after talks with the CM? BJP is harassing us, the police are harassing us. No Opposition in West Bengal has ever faced such a thing as what we are facing. The 19 MPs who are going to BJP, will not be accepted by the BJP,”
His remarks reflected the growing tension between the opposition and the ruling party in the state. Banerjee accused the BJP of targeting non-BJP politicians and said democratic space in West Bengal has weakened. He also alleged that the police are harassing members of his party.
Kirti Azad Also Denies Merger Reports
Another Trinamool Congress MP, Kirti Azad, also rejected the merger reports. Speaking to journalists in New Delhi, Azad said the party’s position was clear and that the rumours were incorrect. He said the two sides would only contest elections as part of an alliance.
Addressing reporters in the national capital, Azad said: “There will be no merger; that is all incorrect news. The election will be contested as an alliance, and the alliance will remain intact.”
The issue of political alliances continues to remain important for opposition parties across the country. For now, both the TMC and Congress are projecting unity in the larger opposition bloc while ruling out any merger. At the same time, they appear keen to protect their separate identities ahead of the electoral battles ahead.
The situation in West Bengal, meanwhile, remains fluid. Several Trinamool leaders have raised concerns over internal developments in the party. Some of them believe certain members may be moving closer to the BJP, which has only added to the speculation around the party’s internal cohesion.
Mamata Banerjee has not yet made any fresh public statement on the matter. More clarity on the internal situation is expected on Monday, when the dissident MPs are likely to place their concerns before the Speaker. The developments are being closely watched as they could shape the state’s political landscape in the coming days.
