Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday, 6 October, after Opposition leaders continued their protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Akashvani Bhawan in New Delhi.

Delhi Police detained Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday, October 6, after opposition leaders protested at Akashvani Bhawan over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demanded a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest was linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have been seeking a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner and demanding his resignation over the issue.

Opposition March Stopped By Police

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition MPs had gathered near Parliament before moving towards the Election Commission. Their march was stopped by police on Parliament Street, near the NITI Aayog office.

After being stopped, the leaders sat on the road and continued their protest. Rahul Gandhi was seen climbing a police barricade along with Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Priyanka Gandhi was taken towards a police bus but soon returned to the protest site and joined Rahul Gandhi.

Leaders Enter Akashvani Bhawan

The protesters later moved towards Akashvani Bhawan. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Congress MP Deepender Hooda entered the premises through the reception gate despite the police asking the protesters to leave.

The leaders later sat under a tree inside the complex. Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the outgoing Punjab Congress chief, was also seen with Rahul Gandhi.

Police had warned that the protest could not continue through the night and asked the leaders to vacate the premises. Those who refused to leave were told they would face detention.

Priyanka Gandhi Says Opposition Has No Hope From Government

During the protest, Priyanka Gandhi said the Opposition wanted to speak directly to the Chief Election Commissioner.

“We want to meet the CEC. We have no hope from the government,” she said.

She also called the government “incompetent” and said Gyanesh Kumar “will not be spared”.

Why Is The Opposition Protesting?

The main issue behind the protest is the SIR exercise, under which electoral rolls are being reviewed. Opposition parties have raised concerns about the process and alleged that genuine voters could lose their names from the electoral rolls.

The Opposition has been demanding answers from the Election Commission and wants to meet Gyanesh Kumar to discuss its concerns.

The detention of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi came after several hours of protest and a standoff between the Opposition leaders and Delhi Police at Akashvani Bhawan.
