In the latest development, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday has allowed activist Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital – chosen by the family. The court said the transfer should take place without affecting his ongoing treatment and directed that a team of doctors at Medanta should take charge of his treatment.
The Delhi High Court allowed activist Sonam Wangchuk to transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital, directing a seamless transition of care and medical records. This decision followed his wife’s appeal against a previous order.
High Court Clears Transfer to Medanta
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia said Wangchuk’s treatment should continue smoothly after his transfer.
The court also directed Safdarjung Hospital to hand over all medical records to Medanta so that the doctors get his complete health information. It also instructed the director of Medanta Hospital to form a panel of doctors to supervise him.
Wife Welcomes High Court’s Decision
Sonam Wangchuk’s wife – Gitanjali Angmo thanked the Delhi High Court. Posting on X- she expressed gratitude to the judges for allowing Wangchuk’s discharge from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta.

Appeal Challenged Earlier Court Order
Gitanjali challenged the order of a single judge, who had earlier refused to permit Wangchuk’s discharge from Safdarjung Hospital.
Informing that the bench had earlier directed Safdarjung Hospital to submit all medical documents, including pathology reports, AIIMS test results, reports from private laboratories and every medical bulletin issued during his treatment.
Court Seeks Clarification on Medical Condition
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Upadhyaya questioned doctors from Safdarjung Hospital about Wangchuk’s medical reports, particularly his increased urea and uric acid levels. The Court also clarified that if the abnormal readings indicated any health issues before passing the order.
