Vijay-led government is seriously considering proposal to serve chicken biriyani to students at government schools once a week.

Speaking to reporters in Erode, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan said that Chief Minister Vijay will take a final call.

Tamil Nadu CM Vijay will decide on Education Minister Rajmohan’s proposal to serve chicken biryani weekly to government school students, ensuring vegetarian options are available. This aims to enhance student nutrition alongside existing meal schemes.

“In Tamil Nadu, educational revolution has always gone hand in hand with a nutritional revolution,” PTI quoted the actor-turned-politician as saying.

He continued, “In that spirit, I personally harboured a desire and submitted a request to the Chief Minister to consider serving chicken biryani once a week to government school students”.

However, the minister clarified that vegetarian meal will be served to those who prefer it. “Growing children need adequate protein-eating chicken biryani will not corrupt or spoil them and the issue should not be politicised,” he added.

Launched in the 1950s by former Chief Minister K Kamaraja, the mid-day meal scheme established a benchmark for Indian social welfare. Over time, successive administrations enhanced its nutritional content and menu offerings.

To further support students, the DMK government introduced a morning breakfast initiative in September 2022. Operating alongside the mid-day program, it ensures primary students receive two nutritious meals every school day.

Earlier, the minister had the TVK government is planning to replace repetitive items such as wheat and rava ‘upma’ with more nutritious and appetising alternatives.

He had attacked the Centre for “withholding” educational funds over policy and language disputes.
