CTA Reports 16 Deaths, 76 Injured On Thursday
The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has expressed grief over the deadly 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Drachen County and nearby areas of Nagchu in Tibet on Thursday night. The administration has urged the Chinese government to ensure transparent relief operations and allow humanitarian groups unrestricted access to areas affected by the disaster.
In a statement issued on Friday, the CTA said Chinese authorities had reported at least 16 deaths and 76 injuries. However, preliminary information received from local sources suggested that the death toll could be higher, with at least 20 people feared dead.
The administration also raised concerns about the condition of damaged areas, access restrictions faced by Tibetan volunteers and the safety of residents as winter approaches.
Passenger train services along the affected stretch of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway resumed on Friday morning, operating at lower speeds as a precaution, China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co Ltd said.
Meanwhile, electricity supply had been restored to 1,937 households in earthquake-hit Baqen County by 10 am local time on Friday, according to State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co Ltd.
Emergency relief materials sent by authorities at different levels have also reached the affected areas, Xinhua reported. The supplies include 1,000 prefabricated housing units, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds and 4,280 quilts, along with other essential items to support residents affected by the earthquake.
