A video claiming to show an unidentified object flying over Tehran has gone viral on social media, with users trying to work out what the lights in the night sky could be.
The clips show several bright lights moving across a dark sky. But the footage does not provide enough detail to establish how far away the object was, how high it was flying or how large it might have been.
Unverified videos showing lights over Tehran, reportedly filmed September 19th and shared widely on September 20th, lack sufficient detail and metadata to identify the object, despite speculation and comparisons to historical events.
Several accounts on X shared the videos on September 20, claiming they were recorded over Tehran a day earlier. One post said the sighting took place near Azadegan in the Iranian capital.
There is, however, no original metadata or precise location information attached to the footage that could independently confirm where or when it was recorded.
What was flying over Tehran?
Social media users have come up with different explanations for the lights. Some believe they were drones, while others have suggested a group of drones, an aircraft or even an LED equipped kite.
The footage itself does not provide enough evidence to establish which explanation is correct.

The word “UFO” can simply mean an object seen in the sky that has not yet been identified. It does not automatically mean the object was extraterrestrial or anything unusual.
Why has the video attracted attention?
The footage surfaced at a time of heightened tensions involving Iran, the US and other countries in West Asia.
Iran and the US exchanged fresh warnings on September 20, with Iran’s military warning that American bases and regional interests could be targeted if Iran faced another attack, Reuters reported.
The US State Department has also warned about possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions in the region.
There is no evidence, however, that the latest warnings or military statements are connected to the lights seen in the videos.
Is this linked to the famous 1976 Tehran sighting?
The timing of the latest videos has also prompted comparisons with a well documented aerial incident over Tehran in September 1976.
Declassified US records contain reports about that incident, including accounts of a bright object being seen over the Iranian capital and Iranian F-4 fighter jets being sent to investigate.
The US National Security Agency’s declassified archive includes a Joint Chiefs of Staff report, a Defense Intelligence Agency summary and a report from the US defence attaché relating to the 1976 incident.
That sighting has remained a subject of interest because of the official records surrounding it. But there is no evidence connecting the 1976 incident to the latest videos.
For now, the new Tehran footage remains unverified. Without the original video, location information or an official identification, it is not possible to say what the lights in the footage actually show.
