A pizza delivery-man was shot dead in New York on Saturday evening.
The victim’s name is Gurdeep Singh, a 28-year-old resident of Kapurthala district in Punjab who had come to the US with dreams of earning money and improving his financial status.
Gurdeep Singh, a 28-year-old pizza delivery driver from Punjab, India, was fatally shot in New York during a suspected hijacking attempt on Richmond Street. His family has lodged a complaint seeking justice and the return of his body to India.
Gurdeep’s family says he was shot dead while delivering a pizza to a customer in Richmond Street, New York, in an alleged hijacking attempt by miscreants.
Gurdeep had left India for the US 13 years ago, with a view to making his own fortune. He had left behind his parents and younger brother in Kapurthala, who still live in the same house he built for them with his own hands.
After landing in the US, Gurdeep took up jobs with native Americans and worked very hard. He had told his parents that he would send them money regularly so that they could also improve their financial status.
Gurdeep’s father Pyara Lal said his son had struggled hard in New York and that he worked like anything after he came to the US.
He added that the family’s hopes were pinched on Gurdeep’s earnings as he was the breadwinner. In addition to working, Gurdeep’s father and his younger brother also work as DJs in Punjab.
Gurdeep’s parents have made a formal complaint with the US authorities that the unidentified miscreants should be caught and tried in a US court and also that the body of Gurdeep should be sent back to India so that last rites could be performed in accordance with Indian rituals. Further, the family is also appealing to the Punjab government to intervene and bring the body back to India at the earliest.
Gurdeep’s father expressed that his son had gone to America to earn money and to provide a better future for his family. But, instead, he faced miscreants who shot dead, leaving them grief-stricken.
