11 Passengers and 4 crew members were injured after an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe mid-air turbulence on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. An Air India spokesperson confirmed that flight AI2379, operated by an Airbus A320, experienced a brief turbulence-related event during cruise that led to a sudden, momentary drop in altitude.

Data from Flightradar24 indicated that the plane dropped approximately 300 feet.
While the airline maintained that the aircraft landed safely in New Delhi and no “serious” injuries were reported, initial records state that 11 passengers and four cabin crew members required medical evaluation. A small group with minor injuries was moved to airport medical facilities and Fortis Hospital for precautionary examination.
A passenger onboard recounted a starkly different scale of chaos, claiming that “70-80 per cent of the people got injured” and that flyers intend to take legal action against the airline. According to the passenger, the severe shaking began about an hour and a half into the flight while most people were asleep.
He noted that the aircraft “suddenly stopped while moving and turned around,” tilting sharply and remaining unstable for two to three minutes. The passenger described multiple casualties, including lower back injuries to himself, shoulder and back trauma to his brother, and a hurt baby.
He further alleged that his brother suffered a ruptured eardrum from the extreme pressure changes. Visuals from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport later verified that ambulances were waiting at the terminal and multiple passengers were being escorted away in wheelchairs or with head bandages
The airline has not released the total number of passengers on board.
“My brother’s eardrum got ruptured. Someone’s baby got hurt. My lower back got injured. My brother got hurt on his shoulder and back. We’ll know more once the medico-legal report is prepared,” the passenger said.

In another interaction, the same passenger said his lower back was injured, while his brother suffered injuries to his shoulder and back. He also claimed that a baby was among those hurt during the turbulence.
“We will 100 per cent take action against Air India,” he added.
