The Sri Lankan anti-corruption agency has made the arrest of the former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda following the allegation of illegal recruiting and sending out overseas for training of the son of the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa named Yoshitha Rajapaksa.
Former Sri Lankan Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda was arrested by the CIABOC anti-corruption agency over allegations regarding the improper recruitment and overseas training of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, later receiving bail from the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
It is yet another significant turn in the battle against corruption that has been undertaken by the Sri Lankan government. Karannagoda has been granted bail at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
What Led to Wasantha Karannagoda’s Arrest?
The allegations against Wasantha Karannagoda have been made by CIABOC, which has claimed that he has been engaging in bribery by recruiting Yoshitha Rajapaksa as a cadet executive officer of the Sri Lankan Navy without following proper procedure.
As per reports, Yoshitha Rajapaksa lacked the qualifications required for that post. Despite this, according to the agency, Yoshitha Rajapaksa has been recruited and then sent for training at the Royal Naval Academy, UK, where the money is claimed to be spent from the public fund.

Granting of Bail by Court
After being arrested, Karannagoda appeared before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
He was released on bail during the course of the ongoing investigation.
So far, no details have been revealed regarding when he will appear in court next.
Who Is Wasantha Karannagoda?
Wasantha Karannagoda held the position of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy when it was the last stage of civil war in the country.
He was one of those who were actively involved in military activities that helped defeat the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009 and ended nearly three decades of warfare.
Wasantha Karannagoda was conferred the rank of Admiral of the Fleet as an honour in 2019.
Past Controversies
Karannagoda has had past controversies involving the well-known “Navy 11” case that occurred when 11 young men disappeared from 2008 to 2009.
The case received international attention following claims by investigators that the men were kidnapped by members of the Navy for a ransom scheme.
Karannagoda was charged with conspiracy and participation in the case but the charges against him were dropped in October 2021 under the presidency of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Not long after, he was appointed Governor of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, an appointment which faced criticism from the families of the victims and human rights groups.
In March 2025, the United Kingdom sanctioned Karannagoda based on human rights violation accusations.
Another Suspect in Case – Yoshitha Rajapaksa
In another development, the present case is also associated with Yoshitha Rajapaksa, who has been detained by the anti-corruption agencies of Sri Lanka recently.
This suspect was released on bail because of the allegations against him regarding the improper use of the country’s money for his naval studies abroad.
Intensifying the Anti-Corruption Drive in Sri Lanka
Karannagoda’s arrest comes as a part of a number of high-profile inquiries that have been initiated since President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took charge in September 2024.
The government is determined to curb corruption by opening up several inquiries against some controversial cases involving ex-politicians, military officers, and senior government officials.
Among the latest developments is the arrest of the former head of intelligence services, Major General Suresh Sallay, as a result of the ongoing inquiry into the 2019 Easter Sunday explosions.
Furthermore, a Colombo court has banned the former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from traveling abroad while the Easter attack investigation goes on.
The arrest of Wasantha Karannagoda represents yet another phase in the investigation of corruption charges by Sri Lanka.
