The 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will test two competing political claims. The BJP must prove that its 2024 Lok Sabha setback was temporary, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav must show that his party can win beyond the constituencies where it gained ground.

The 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will test the BJP’s ability to recover from its 2024 Lok Sabha setback and Akhilesh Yadav’s SP’s success in expanding its coalition, with outcomes impacting the 2029 general elections.
The stakes extend beyond Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly seats and 80 Lok Sabha constituencies, making its political direction important for the 2029 general elections. The BJP won 255 Assembly seats in 2022, but the 2024 parliamentary results changed the political conversation.
The BJP fell from 62 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019 to 33 in 2024. The SP won 37 seats and the Congress secured eight, giving the opposition alliance a combined total of 45 seats? No. Together, the SP and Congress won 45 seats, according to these figures, while the original article’s combined figure of 43 requires clarification.
BJP Must Win Back Voters, Not Just Seats
The BJP’s biggest challenge is to identify why its support weakened and convince dissatisfied voters to back it again. Its welfare schemes, organisational network and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remain important strengths. However, voters will also judge the government on jobs, prices, public services, local development and law and order.
Candidate selection could become a major factor. Replacing unpopular MLAs may help the BJP address local anger, but it could also create resentment among leaders denied tickets. The party must also maintain coordination with the RSS, whose grassroots network can help mobilise voters.
The BJP’s smaller allies could create further complications. Sanjay Nishad’s Nishad Party has expressed concern over the demand for Scheduled Caste status for the Nishad fishing community, which is currently classified among OBCs. How the BJP manages such demands could influence its wider caste coalition.
Akhilesh Yadav Needs A Wider Social Coalition
The SP’s 2024 success has given Akhilesh Yadav an opportunity to challenge the BJP, but repeating that performance in Assembly elections will require a different level of constituency-level preparation.
His PDA strategy, focused on backward classes, Dalits and minorities, aims to expand the SP’s traditional Muslim-Yadav support base. The challenge is to turn this formula into votes across communities whose political preferences differ by region and local leadership.

Mayawati’s BSP remains relevant to this calculation. Although its electoral strength has declined, its Dalit support base could influence closely contested seats. If the SP attracts more Dalit voters, it could weaken the BSP. If the BSP retains a significant vote share, however, it could divide votes among parties opposing the BJP.
Congress Alliance Could Make Or Break Opposition Plans
The SP and Congress must settle their seat-sharing arrangements without creating friction among local leaders. The Congress needs enough constituencies to rebuild its organisation, while the SP will want to contest seats where it has a stronger chance of winning.
A workable agreement could prevent opposition votes from splitting. Disagreements could give the BJP an advantage in close contests.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is another issue to watch. Opposition parties have raised concerns about voter exclusions and inaccurate records. Any proven irregularities could become a significant campaign issue, particularly in constituencies decided by narrow margins.
The Road To 2029 Starts In Uttar Pradesh
The BJP could recover through better organisation, candidate changes and welfare outreach. The SP could strengthen its position by expanding its social coalition and maintaining its alliance with the Congress. The BSP and smaller allies could also affect results in individual constituencies.
Neither outcome is guaranteed. The BJP must repair the weaknesses exposed in 2024, while Akhilesh Yadav must demonstrate that his party’s gains can translate into an Assembly majority.
Ultimately, the election will be decided not by one controversy or campaign slogan, but by the ability of each side to build a broad coalition and bring its supporters to polling booths.
