The External Affairs Ministry (MEA) on Thursday said that they rescued 84 Indians in total after flash floods swept through parts of Nepal, leaving behind a trail of death and destruction.
The rescued Indians include 63 workers working with the Trishuli-1 hydropower project and 21 people from Tamil Nadu. However, contact has not yet been established with around 290 Indians who were in Nepal when the floods struck.
Following Nepal’s flash floods, India rescued 84 citizens including 63 from the Trishuli-1 project and 21 from Tamil Nadu, while working to locate 290 missing Indians and evacuating approximately 200 stranded near the Chinese border, supported by over 47 tonnes of relief aid.
At a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Indian authorities were working with Nepalese officials to locate those still unaccounted for and check on their safety.
Among those whose whereabouts remain unknown are 73 Indians working on the Trishuli-1 project. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is in touch with the project authorities for updates. Communication networks in the affected areas have been disrupted, making it difficult to reach those stranded there.
India has also sent more than 47 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to Nepal to support rescue and relief operations. The government is also mobilising Bailey bridges to help restore connectivity and assist teams working in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the MEA has set up a control room that will operate around the clock to coordinate the rescue efforts and assist Indians affected by the floods. The Indian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing have also opened 24-hour helplines.
Jaiswal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Nepalese counterpart on Wednesday and expressed his condolences over the loss of lives. Modi assured Nepal that India stands with its people and is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance.
India is also working to evacuate Indians stranded on the Chinese side of the border.
Around 200 Indians have sought help for evacuation, Jaiswal said. Of them, 95 are in Darchen and are travelling towards Hilsa to cross into Nepal. Four others are in Geelong City, while 13 Indians in Zuthulpuk are heading towards Saga. Another 60 to 70 Indians are also making their way towards Saga.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing is coordinating with local authorities and working to ensure the safe evacuation of the stranded Indians.
