With Muharram 2026 scheduled for late June, many people in India are preparing for a long weekend, as the gazetted holiday is set to fall on Friday, June 26. The day is observed across the country as Youm-e-Ashura, marking the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.

The Islamic New Year 1448 AH has already commenced in several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Qatar, where 1 Muharram was observed on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. However, India, Bangladesh, and other South Asian nations determine their religious calendar based on local crescent moon sightings.

In India, Muharram 2026 is observed as a gazetted holiday on Friday, June 26, marking Youm-e-Ashura on the 10th day of the Islamic New Year, contingent upon local moon sightings.

When will Muharram 2026 begin in India?

The start of Muharram in India depends entirely on when the crescent moon is spotted at the end of the previous Islamic month, Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH.

The dependency on lunar cycles is why Islamic dates often vary by a day or two between different countries. A new month begins only once the crescent moon is sighted on the 29th day of the ongoing month. If weather conditions or visibility prevent a sighting, the current month automatically completes 30 days before the new cycle begins.

For administrative purposes, the Indian government has scheduled the central gazetted holiday for Muharram on Friday, June 26, 2026. This date corresponds to Ashura in the official holiday calendar, though the actual religious observance remains contingent on announcements by local moon-sighting committees.

Youm-e-Ashura 2026 date in India and Arab countries

Youm-e-Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds deep religious and historical significance. In Arab nations where 1 Muharram began on June 16, Ashura will fall on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

In India, Ashura is expected to be marked on Friday, June 26, subject to final moon-sighting determinations. The day is observed with solemnity, particularly by Shia Muslims who mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Many Sunni Muslims also mark the day by observing voluntary fasts and engaging in prayers.

Unlike other festive occasions, Muharram is a period of reflection, grief, and remembrance rather than celebration. Depending on local traditions and administrative permissions, mourning processions, majlis gatherings, and community prayers are organized in various parts of the country.

Muharram 2026 public holiday in India

Since Muharram is a gazetted central holiday, government offices, post offices, and several public and private sector bank branches are expected to remain closed on Friday, June 26. Certain administrative services and educational institutions may also observe a holiday depending on state-specific guidelines.

However, holiday schedules can differ across various states and Union Territories. While some states follow the central list, others issue custom notifications nearer to the date. Citizens planning bank transactions or official visits are advised to confirm scheduling with their local branches and administrative offices.

Likely to remain closed Likely to remain open
Central government offices and departments Public transport including metro, buses, and trains
Many public and private bank branches Airports and flight operations
Post offices and administrative departments Shops, commercial markets, and restaurants
Stock markets (NSE and BSE) Digital banking, UPI, and ATMs

While physical bank branches may close, online banking platforms, ATMs, and digital transaction channels will operate without interruption. Major transport hubs and services, including flight and train operations, will also run regularly. Commuters in major cities should, however, plan for potential route diversions due to local Muharram processions.

Planning the late June long weekend

With the Muharram holiday falling on a Friday, many working professionals can look forward to a three-day weekend spanning June 26 to June 28. This makes it an ideal opportunity for quick domestic getaways or short family trips.

Late June coincides with the progression of the monsoon across many states in India. Travelers planning a trip should carefully assess regional weather forecasts, road conditions, and landslide warnings in hilly terrains before finalising their itineraries. Cooler destinations and heritage towns often experience a surge in tourist footfall during such long weekends.

Popular destinations for a short break include Srinagar, Leh, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Goa. Due to high demand during extended weekends, booking transport and accommodation well in advance is highly recommended to avoid surge pricing.

For those staying in major urban centers, keeping track of traffic advisories issued by city police departments will be crucial, as key roads may experience congestion or diversions during traditional processions.
