The curtains have fallen on a chapter of Hindi cinema’s golden era with the passing of Sudesh Dhawan, popularly known as Sudesh Kumar. The veteran actor died on May 1, 2026, at the age of 95.

He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties earlier in the week, but was later brought back home in keeping with his wishes. His wife, Jaya Dhawan, confirmed that he passed away peacefully at home the next morning, where a temporary medical setup had been arranged.

Veteran actor Sudesh Dhawan, known as Sudesh Kumar, died on May 1, 2026, at age 95. He was recognized for roles in films like Chhoti Bahen and Saranga, later becoming a producer for successful movies such as Man Mandir.

Born in 1931 in Peshawar, Sudesh Kumar moved to Mumbai with his family during his early years. He pursued his education at Elphinstone College, though his ambitions lay beyond academics. While his family hoped he would become a doctor, he chose the world of cinema instead.

His entry into films was shaped by his association with Prithviraj Kapoor and the Kapoor family, with whom he shared distant ties. Beginning his journey in theatre, he soon transitioned to films, making his debut with Paisa (1957).

Though he appeared in several early roles, it was Chhoti Bahen (1959) that brought him recognition, followed by Saranga (1961), which established him as a leading star. Over time, he became known for both lead and supporting performances in films such as Bharosa, Grihasti, Khandan, and Gopi.

Later, in the 1970s, he moved behind the camera as a producer, backing films like Man Mandir, Ulzan, Badalte Rishte, and Jaan Hatheli Pe, many of which found commercial success.

Sudesh Kumar’s journey-from theatre to stardom and eventually film production-reflects a lifetime devoted to cinema, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with audiences.
