Chennai and its surrounding districts continued to reel under intense summer heat on Thursday, with temperatures soaring past the 40-degree Celsius mark across several parts of Tamil Nadu. The sweltering conditions were especially severe in the KTCC region – comprising Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai and Chengalpattu – as weather stations reported some of the hottest readings of the season.
According to weather data recorded on May 21, Vellore emerged as the hottest location in the state, registering a blistering 42.5°C. Tiruttani followed closely at 42.1°C, while Chennai Airport touched 41.6°C. Chennai city itself recorded 40.4°C, making it another exhausting day for residents battling relentless heat and humidity.
Tamil Nadu experienced intense heat with temperatures exceeding 40°C, Vellore hitting 42.5°C on May 21. Chennai saw 40.4°C. A slight dip is forecast for Chennai due to sea breeze, with potential thunderstorms in interior districts and Chennai over the weekend.
Several suburban pockets around Chennai also witnessed extreme temperatures. Among the automatic weather stations, Poonamallee and Kancheepuram both logged 42.5°C, while Tambaram recorded 42.3°C. Avadi touched 41.8°C, Tirur saw 41.6°C, and Villivakkam crossed 41°C. Other areas such as Thiruverkadu, Chembarabakkam and RK Pet also remained above the 40°C mark.
The scorching conditions extended beyond the Chennai region as cities including Erode, Tiruchy, Karur and Madurai all recorded temperatures around or above 40°C. The widespread heatwave-like situation has left residents struggling with uncomfortable afternoons and warm nights.
However, there may be slight relief on the horizon for Chennai and nearby districts. Independent weather blogger Chennai Rains noted that weather models indicate a marginal dip in temperatures over the next couple of days. In a social media update, the blogger said that while the city could experience an early spike in heat during the morning hours, the arrival of a relatively stronger sea breeze by noon may help keep daytime temperatures slightly below 40°C in core city areas.
Suburban regions, however, are still likely to remain hotter, with some places expected to continue crossing the 40°C threshold. The sea breeze effect, which usually offers relief to coastal Chennai during summer, is expected to play a key role in moderating conditions in parts of the city.
Meanwhile, Vellore and Ranipet districts are likely to continue as the hottest zones in Tamil Nadu in the immediate future. Meteorological models also hint at the possibility of isolated evening thunderstorms in interior districts, which could provide temporary respite from the oppressive heat.
For Chennai residents, there is also cautious optimism about potential thunderstorm activity over the coming days. Forecast models suggest a slight chance of thunderstorms developing closer to Chennai either on Friday or over the weekend. Though not expected to be widespread, any rainfall activity could help ease temperatures and improve comfort levels after two consecutive days of extreme heat.
With summer conditions intensifying across Tamil Nadu, health experts continue to advise people to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
