Islamabad: As high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran get underway in Islamabad, Tehran used the moment to send a powerful reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict, highlighting the controversial Minab school strike that killed 168 children.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf shared an image from inside his aircraft en route to Islamabad, showing empty seats marked with photographs of the victims. Captioning the post “Minab168,” Ghalibaf described them as his “companions” on the journey, underscoring Iran’s effort to keep the tragedy central to the negotiations.
Amid high-stakes talks in Islamabad, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf highlighted the Minab school strike that killed 168 children, while Tehran expressed distrust towards the US and demanded a ceasefire and unfreezing of financial assets.
The Minab strike occurred in the early days of the US-Israel-Iran conflict, when American forces targeted what they said was a military installation near the Shajareh Tayyebeh school. While Washington maintained the strike was aimed at a legitimate target, Tehran alleged that the attack was deliberate and accused the US of responsibility for civilian deaths.
Iran has since taken the matter to the United Nations, demanding accountability. The UN has called on the US to complete its investigation and ensure justice for the victims.
Iran signals distrust ahead of talks
The Iranian delegation, led by Ghalibaf and including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Islamabad with a cautious tone, expressing deep scepticism about negotiations with Washington.
“We have good intentions but we do not trust,” Ghalibaf said, citing past experiences of what he described as “broken promises” in dealings with the US.
Tehran has outlined key demands, including a ceasefire in Lebanon and the unfreezing of Iranian financial assets. Officials have warned that failure to meet these conditions could lead Iran to withdraw from any agreement.
Tense backdrop to diplomacy
The talks come amid heightened tensions, with Washington maintaining a firm stance. US officials have cautioned Iran against using negotiations as leverage, warning of possible renewed strikes if talks fail.
As both sides engage in indirect dialogue in Islamabad, the outcome remains uncertain. The negotiations are seen as a critical test of whether diplomacy can hold amid deep mistrust and ongoing regional instability.
