The programme began at 5:30 AM with more than 1,000 citizens participating in activities including yoga, zumba and rope skipping. Speaking about the special theme, Mayank Shrivastava, Deputy Director General, Sports Authority of India, said journalists and media organisations have played an important role in turning the Fit India ‘Sundays on Cycle’ initiative into a wider public movement.
He said journalists have consistently highlighted the initiative, created awareness and helped spread the message of fitness among a larger audience. The 91st edition was therefore dedicated to recognising their contribution.
Journalists and Sporting Personalities Felicitated
The programme began with the felicitation of journalists from leading media houses in the national capital, along with former Indian cricketer Parvinder Awana and Fit India Ambassador Shivam Gahlot. Participants also took the Nasha Mukti pledge, reaffirming their commitment to a healthy and substance-free lifestyle.
The event was subsequently flagged off for a 5-kilometre cycle ride around India Gate.
Parvinder Awana Encourages Youth to Adopt Fitness
Former Indian cricketer Parvinder Awana, who had participated in an earlier edition of Fit India ‘Sundays on Cycle’, said the 91st edition was another step towards making fitness a daily habit, particularly among young people. Awana said the campaign also encourages youngsters to stay away from addiction and adopt regular exercise and sports for better physical and mental well-being.
With cricket featuring in the Asian Games 2026, Awana extended his best wishes to the Indian men’s and women’s teams and athletes from other sporting disciplines.
Fit India Ambassador Urges Youth to Avoid Steroids
Fitness expert and Fit India Ambassador Shivam Gahlot urged Gen Z to stay away from steroids and unnecessary supplements. Gahlot said the Fit India Movement, launched in 2019, has expanded from cities to villages and reached millions of people. He emphasised that fitness requires consistency and cannot be achieved through shortcuts.
He encouraged young people to focus on regular exercise, a balanced home-cooked diet and a disciplined lifestyle rather than relying on steroids or unnecessary supplements for quick results.
Game Zone Adds to Fitness Activities
A dedicated game zone was also set up at the venue, featuring carrom and chess along with sporting activities such as badminton, tug of war and an obstacle race. The activities kept participants engaged throughout the morning while promoting fitness, recreation and community participation.
