At least five people have died and 41 others remain missing after a ferry caught fire near Indonesia’s Madura Island on Sunday. Rescue teams are continuing an extensive search operation as authorities work to locate those who are still unaccounted for.

According to Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, the ferry was carrying 271 passengers and crew members when the fire broke out during its journey. So far, 225 people have been rescued, while officials continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

It must be noted that the ferry was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire erupted on Sunday morning.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the blaze. Investigators are examining the vessel and gathering evidence to establish how the fire started. Officials have not reported any signs of foul play, and the investigation is still in its early stages.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said emergency teams were immediately deployed after the incident. By Sunday afternoon, rescuers had successfully evacuated 225 passengers and crew members, while search operations continued for the 41 people still missing.

The death toll could change as rescue teams continue searching for those who remain missing.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Officials are expected to inspect the ferry’s condition, safety systems and operational records as part of the inquiry.
