New Three-Stage Format For 2027 World Cup
The 2027 World Cup will use a new competition structure designed around three stages before the semi-finals. The tournament will first begin with a Super Series in Windhoek on October 2. The three lowest-ranked teams among the 14 qualified sides will play each other in a round-robin competition. The team finishing at the top will move into the next stage.
The remaining 12 teams will then be divided into two groups of six. Each team will play the other sides in its group.
The top three teams from each group, along with the next-best team across the two groups, will qualify for the Super 7 stage.
Super 7 Leads To Semi-Finals
The Super 7 stage will consist of 21 round-robin matches. Seven teams will compete in this phase, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals.
The semi-final match-ups will be:
The winners of the two semi-finals will meet in the final on November 21, 2027.
The revised format means teams will have to progress through multiple stages before reaching the knockout phase, with the Super 7 determining the four semi-finalists.
India-Pakistan Match On October 10
One of the biggest fixtures of the group stage will be the India vs Pakistan clash in Johannesburg on October 10.
India’s campaign will begin two days earlier, with Australia providing their first opponent in Cape Town. The early Group A schedule therefore gives India two major matches in the opening days of the tournament.
The 2027 World Cup will be the 14th edition of the Men’s Cricket World Cup and will take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
