Kerala is grappling with a fresh public health challenge as authorities respond to two separate infection threats – a Shigella outbreak affecting children and a suspected Nipah virus case reported in Kozhikode. Health officials have intensified surveillance, contact tracing, and preventive measures across affected areas.

Shigella Outbreak Among Children

The Shigella concern emerged following the death of a four-year-old girl from Kozhikode, who succumbed to shigellosis, a bacterial infection of the intestines. This marks the first fatality linked to the recent Shigella cases in the district, prompting heightened monitoring in schools and communities.

Kerala is managing a Shigella outbreak that caused a child’s death in Kozhikode, alongside a suspected Nipah virus case in the district, prompting intensified surveillance and contact tracing by health officials.

Officials are tracking additional infections, particularly among children, while strengthening sanitation checks and awareness campaigns. Efforts are also focused on identifying possible sources of contamination and improving hygiene practices in affected areas.

Suspected Nipah Virus Case

Meanwhile, concern has grown after a 43-year-old man from Kozhikode tested positive in an initial screening for Nipah virus. The patient, a resident of Feroke, was admitted after developing symptoms consistent with the infection and remains under close medical observation. Samples have been sent for confirmation, while health teams have begun preparing contact lists and tracing potential exposures.

Understanding Shigella

Shigella is a highly infectious bacterial illness that spreads mainly through contaminated food, water, or contact with infected surfaces. It can spread rapidly in schools and households, especially where hygiene standards are poor.

Symptoms typically include diarrhoea, fever, stomach pain, and weakness. While many recover with timely medical care, young children are more vulnerable to serious complications.

Health officials have urged residents to remain cautious and maintain cleanliness, particularly around food preparation and drinking water. The Kerala Health Department has stated that the situation is currently under control, though monitoring will continue.

Why Nipah Remains a Major Concern

Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection that can spread from animals to humans and, in some cases, between people through close contact. It can affect both the respiratory and nervous systems, making early detection and isolation critical.

Kerala has faced previous Nipah outbreaks, especially in Kozhikode, including major incidents since 2018. Over the years, the state has strengthened its response system, with rapid testing, contact tracing, and public health monitoring forming the backbone of its containment strategy.

The latest suspected case has renewed attention on the importance of early reporting of symptoms and adherence to health department guidance. Authorities have urged residents not to panic but to remain vigilant as investigations continue.

With both infections being monitored simultaneously, Kerala’s health machinery is working to prevent further spread while maintaining testing and surveillance across affected districts.
