Madhya Pradesh showcases its wildlife, tribal culture and rural hospitality at ITB Asia, emphasising redistributing demand through discovery to offer immersive, authentic experiences beyond traditional destinations.
Emphasising the importance of innovation and discovery in tourism, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja remarked, “If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the father of discovery.” He noted that global tourism has changed significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, with travellers increasingly exploring destinations beyond established tourist hotspots in search of new experiences.
According to him, excessive tourist congestion often results from visitors concentrating on a limited number of destinations during specific periods. Redistributing tourism demand and discovering lesser-known destinations can help address this challenge while creating new opportunities for tourism development.
Wildlife, Tribal Culture and Heritage Highlight Madhya Pradesh’s Tourism Potential
During his presentation on Redistributing Demand Through Discovery, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja highlighted the state’s natural wealth, cultural diversity and traditional art forms. With more than 25 per cent of its geographical area under forest cover, Madhya Pradesh is among India’s greenest states. It is also home to seven major tribal communities and 45 sub-tribal groups, each preserving distinctive traditions and ways of life.
The state’s five major cultural regions are known for their diverse heritage and craftsmanship. Chanderi and Maheshwari textiles, Gond painting and Bhopal’s traditional Zari-Zardozi embroidery are among the art forms that contribute to Madhya Pradesh’s unique cultural identity.
Describing the state as a vibrant “Wild Kingdom”, the Tourism Secretary highlighted its wildlife attractions, including tigers, cheetahs, leopards, vultures and gharials. Pench National Park, associated with the globally popular stories of Mowgli and The Jungle Book, is another major attraction for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
Nature Walks, River Rafting and UNESCO Heritage Sites
Madhya Pradesh offers a variety of experiences for adventure seekers and heritage enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy nature walks in Pench National Park and river rafting on the Betwa River in the historic town of Orchha.
The state’s heritage attractions include the Sanchi Stupa, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments and the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters. According to the presentation, Madhya Pradesh has three World Heritage Sites and 19 sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List, taking the total number of sites mentioned to 22.
These attractions, along with the state’s natural landscapes and cultural traditions, offer opportunities to attract travellers with varied interests and encourage visits beyond conventional tourist circuits.
Helicopter Tourism and Film Tourism to Boost Connectivity
Dr. Ilaiyaraaja also highlighted efforts to expand helicopter tourism services to improve air connectivity and make offbeat destinations more accessible to visitors.
Madhya Pradesh is promoting its film-friendly environment to attract film productions and strengthen international film tourism. The state has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Spanish Film Commission to support this initiative.
Highlighting the role of women in tourism, he also pointed to initiatives involving women safari drivers and hotels operated entirely by women. These efforts aim to strengthen safe, responsible and inclusive tourism while expanding opportunities for women.
Tourists Invited to Experience Rural Life and Traditional Cuisine
Inviting international travellers, exhibitors, travel professionals and tour operators to explore Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja said that the state’s rural tourism initiatives are being developed in collaboration with local communities.
These experiences allow visitors to discover local lifestyles, traditional art forms and cultural practices at close quarters. He emphasised that the true appeal of a destination lies not only in its landscapes and monuments but also in the warmth and hospitality of its people.
He also encouraged international visitors to explore Madhya Pradesh’s traditional cuisine, including Malwa’s popular poha-jalebi, spicy Ratlami sev, dal-bafla, the famous gajak of Morena and Gwalior, and mutton curries reflecting Nawabi and Bundeli culinary traditions.
Expressing confidence in the state’s tourism prospects, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja said that year-round cultural festivals, natural attractions, helicopter connectivity, a safe environment and the warm hospitality of local communities could make Madhya Pradesh a memorable destination for visitors from across the world.
