US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s India visit moved from hard talks to heritage as Rubio, spouse Jeanette Rubio, and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor spent Monday morning at the Taj Mahal in Agra, briefly stepping away from preparations for the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi focused on Indo-Pacific security.

From May 23-26, 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India, engaging in talks on regional security and trade with Indian leaders, visiting the Taj Mahal, inaugurating a US Embassy annex, and attending the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.

The American delegation arrived at Agra Air Force Station in a special aircraft at 9:05 am on 25 May, under high security. From there, Rubio, Jeanette Rubio and Ambassador Sergio Gor travelled directly to the 17th-century Mughal mausoleum, where officials guided the group through the site while regular tourist entry continued with controlled movement.

Rubio’s India visit had already been busy before the Agra stop. On Saturday, 23 May, Rubio landed in Kolkata and visited the Missionaries of Charity. Later, Rubio reached New Delhi to inaugurate a new US Embassy Support Annex worth $20 million, signalling deeper administrative cooperation between the two governments.

The schedule intensified on Sunday, 24 May, when Rubio held wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Rubio then met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for discussions on regional security, with particular attention on strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia corridors that both countries monitor closely.

Across the weekend, Secretary Rubio also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for detailed consultations. During that interaction, Rubio delivered an official invitation from President Trump, asking Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House later in 2026, underlining the priority Washington places on engagement with New Delhi at the highest level.

Trade and investment featured strongly in conversations. Ambassador Sergio Gor stated that Indian corporate investment in the United States has climbed to a record $20.5 billion. Rubio expressed confidence that India and the US are close to finalising a long-term bilateral trade agreement designed to be durable and mutually beneficial for both economies.

At the Taj Mahal, Rubio and Jeanette Rubio followed a well-known protocol for visiting dignitaries when they sat on the iconic marble bench facing the central reflecting pool for photographs. Ambassador Sergio Gor joined the couple on the bench, and the trio posed together to mark the official cultural halt during the otherwise packed diplomatic journey.

Security agencies from India and the United States mounted a detailed protective grid around the monument complex. Tourist entry was not halted, but movement within specific zones was briefly restricted to ensure the delegation could move without disruption. Despite the tight arrangements, officials ensured that regular viewing of the monument continued for the public.

Rubio also signed the visitors’ book at the Taj Mahal, using the opportunity to leave a short message about the site’s significance. Rubio thanked the authorities for the visit and described the monument as “one of the true treasures of the world.” Officials present at the complex noted the comment for their records.

After the Taj Mahal tour on Monday morning, Rubio departed Agra for Jaipur to attend further cultural engagements. The visit will eventually bring Rubio back to New Delhi for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which is viewed as a major diplomatic event.

The overall itinerary of the Marco Rubio India visit is outlined below for clarity.

On Tuesday, 26 May, Rubio is scheduled to return to New Delhi for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by Minister S. Jaishankar. Rubio will join foreign ministers from Australia and Japan, with discussions expected to highlight maritime security, resilient AI supply chains, critical minerals, and the wider security picture across the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.

Diplomatic sources expect the conversations at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to align with themes raised during Rubio’s bilateral talks, including secure sea lanes and stable trade flows. The Taj Mahal stop offered a brief cultural pause, but the Marco Rubio India visit remains dominated by strategic engagement between New Delhi, Washington and key regional partners.
