An IT engineer in his 48s succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a Multi-purpose Vehicle (MPV) while running in the morning along NDA-Pashan road in Pune. The incident took place in the vicinity of Maruti temple at about 7 AM.

Pune Hit And Run Case

IT engineer Virendra Dwivedi (48) died in Pune after being hit by an MPV driven by a 19-year-old near the Maruti temple on NDA-Pashan road around 7 AM; a case is registered under BNS Sections 106 and 281.

The victim has been identified as Virendra Dwivedi, who was working in an IT firm based in Hinjewadi. The police have revealed that Dwivedi was crossing the road when the MPV struck him.

Software Engineer Hit While Crossing Road

As per the Chatushrungi police officials, Dwivedi was jogging early morning when the incident occurred. According to Assistant Inspector Chaya Borkar, Dwivedi was associated with an IT company located in Hinjewadi and he was crossing the road at that time when the vehicle collided with him.

The collision caused Dwivedi a lot of injury. Some runners along with the MPV driver quickly shifted him to a private hospital in Bavdhan. However, he died upon admission.

Impact Threw Runner Onto Bonnet

An eyewitness, Dinesh Yadav, a security guard at a local defense facility, stated that the MPV was heading towards Pashan Circle when it crashed into Dwivedi.

Dwivedi was thrown up into the air due to the collision as he landed on the bonnet of the vehicle and then fell to the road, dragging along with the vehicle for a while.

The eyewitness claims that the driver reportedly told people present there that he had fallen asleep for a few seconds while driving the vehicle. Also, the driver stated that he was driving the vehicle slowly.

As a result of the crash, the bonnet and windscreen of the MPV got damaged.

19-Year-Old Driver Booked

Police have recovered CCTV footage from the accident spot as part of the investigation.
A case has been registered against the 19-year-old MPV driver under Sections 106 and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was registered following a complaint filed by Dwivedi’s 43-year-old brother, Dhirendra.

Police are examining the CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the exact circumstances of the crash.

Parked Vehicles Raise Safety Concerns

The accident has also brought attention to traffic and parking problems near the Maruti Temple.

Police said the area becomes particularly crowded on Saturdays because many devotees visit the temple and park their vehicles along the road.

Assistant Inspector Borkar said parked vehicles reduce the available width of the carriageway, potentially making the stretch more difficult for motorists and pedestrians to navigate.

The road’s reduced width could be an additional safety concern for morning runners and other road users, particularly during busy periods.

Second Jogger Death in Pune in Two Months

Dwivedi’s death is the second reported fatal road accident involving a jogger in Pune in less than two months. On July 19, fitness expert Uday Shashikant Birmal, 38, was seriously injured after an autorickshaw allegedly hit him from behind on DP Road in Erandwane.

Birmal succumbed to his injuries around two weeks later.

The two incidents have once again raised concerns about road safety for pedestrians, runners and other vulnerable road users in Pune, particularly on roads that experience heavy traffic and roadside parking.
