Congress has made a significant change in its Punjab organisation with the appointment of former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh as new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Singh takes charge at a crucial time for the party with the state heading towards the 2027 Assembly elections.
Singh, a former captain of the Indian hockey team and Olympian, replaces Amarinder Singh Raja Warring who resigned as Punjab Congress chief after a prolonged period of differences within the state unit. Warring led the organisation since 2022 after the party’s defeat in the previous Assembly election.
Pargat Singh, former Indian hockey captain and MLA, has been appointed the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The change sees the focus turn to the Congress’s preparations for the next electoral battle in Punjab, where it looks to strengthen its organisation across the state to prepare a strong political campaign ahead of the polls.
Singh, the MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, brings a long political career as well as a high-profile sporting background to the state leadership role. Singh, who played for the Indian hockey team, entered electoral politics in 2012 and joined the Congress. He also served as a minister in the government headed by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Singh’s appointment comes against the backdrop of differing views among senior Congress leaders in Punjab. After months of disagreement over the functioning and leadership of the state unit, Warring resigned from the post. He said he had felt that Congress’s Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot may have favoured change, but he did not have proof.
The post also retains the existing working presidents and the chairpersons and co-chairpersons of various election-related committees in Punjab, suggesting that the focus will be on combining the change in leadership with continuity in the party’s election machinery.
Singh will have the task of coordinating the state organisation, bringing together different sections of Punjab Congress and preparing the party for an election in which the Congress will look to regain power in the state.
The leadership change therefore marks more than just a change at the top of the Punjab Congress. It signals the start of a new phase for the party as it prepares to shape its organisation and campaign for the next Assembly elections.
