Iran is on the cusp of acquiring a new missile capability that could threaten the ability of the US to protect its ships in the region.
According to a report by the Financial Times, Russia has been secretly helping Iran develop a new generation of supersonic cruise missiles through a programme known as C430L.
A report indicates Russia is assisting Iran in developing supersonic cruise missiles using ramjet technology through the C430L program since 2023, which could threaten US naval vessels by significantly reducing detection and response times.
The programme reportedly began in 2023 and involved technology that could enable Iranian missiles to travel at several times the speed of sound.

The Key Technology: Ramjet Engines
The report highlighted the ramjet propulsion technology that Iran has been attempting to develop for years.
Ramjets are designed to operate at high speeds. Combined with a low-altitude flight profile, the technology could enable a missile to be significantly more difficult to detect and intercept.
For the US, the concern would be the shorter response time.
A missile that travels at several times the speed of sound could cover large distances quickly, potentially leaving naval air-defence systems with only a limited amount of time to respond.
Russia’s Role Under Scrutiny
The report highlighted the significance of the technology transfer as Iran has been seeking advanced ramjet capabilities for years.
Fabian Hinz, a senior analyst with Conflict Armament Research, told the Financial Times that the technology involved was highly strategically sensitive and a deal of this scale would most likely have required the approval of the highest levels of the Russian government.
Leaked documents reviewed by the newspaper reportedly indicated that preparations for the C430L agreement were already underway prior to the signing of the contract in November 2023.
Could US Aircraft Carriers Be At Risk?
The potential target for the technology is not limited to land-based military installations.
Jim Lamson, a former CIA military analyst specialising in Iran, said the technology could give Tehran a qualitatively new strategic weapon that could threaten US Navy vessels.
The combination of speed and low-level flight is of particular importance.
Modern naval defence systems operate on detecting an incoming missile, tracking its trajectory and launching an interceptor. A quicker, lower missile could compress the entire process into a significantly shorter timeframe.
Part of a Bigger Russia-Iran Military Partnership
The missile programme reportedly fits into a larger military partnership between Moscow and Tehran.
Iran has supported Russia’s drone programme, while Russia has been accused of providing assistance for Iran’s missile development.
The cooperation takes place as Russia and Iran align on military and strategic issues.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow was trying to provide Tehran with assistance and supplies that it needed during its conflict with the United States.
China’s Role Adds Another Layer
China has also emerged as a critical element in Iran’s growing military technology network.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly obtained a high-resolution Chinese satellite that was used to track US military positions in the Middle East.
The satellite was reportedly used around the time of Iranian missile and drone attacks.
The US later sanctioned Chinese satellite supplier Earth Eye, accusing it of supplying imagery to Iran that facilitated attacks against American forces.
The reported Russian missile assistance, combined with Iran’s access to Chinese satellite technology, could further complicate the security situation for US forces across the Middle East.
